Joseph Mallord William Turner Inscription by Turner: Title of Sketchbook 1811

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Front Cover:
Inscription by Turner: Title of Sketchbook 1811
D40815
Ink on parchment, 166 x 208 mm
Inscribed by Turner in ink ‘Ivy Bridge to Pensance [sic]’ at centre
Stamped in black ‘CXXV’ top right

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Turner’s memorandum is slightly inaccurate in defining the end of this leg of his 1811 West Country tour, as the book ends with numerous views of St Michael’s Mount, a few miles short of Penzance, which appears rather in the Cornwall and Devon sketchbook (Tate D41289–D41291, D41366; Turner Bequest CXXV a 14, 15, 16, 84).
Technical notes:
There is a dark vertical crease for the full height of the cover, just to the left of centre. The edges are trimmed slightly irregularly, and there is some spotting and staining.
Verso:
Blank, save for stamp in black ‘CXXV’ top left.
