As Maurice Davies has shown,1 the sketchbook must have been used for Turner’s research on perspective as early as 1809, and the book may have been in use in 1808, as discussed in the Introduction. The particular significance of Turner’s ‘1811’ is unclear, and it may simply be a doodle made in the course of that year.
