This is the left half of a double-page panorama continued on folio 79 recto opposite (D11161), recording the view from just north of Heysham Head, looking out over Heysham village and Morecambe Bay to the distant Lake District hills. There is a detail of the porch of Heysham Lodge above to the left. Turner made a more detailed sketch of almost exactly the same material in the Yorkshire 4 book (Tate D11508–D11510; Turner Bequest CXLVII 40, 40a–41), which accompanied him on the same tour.
The present author has dated Turner’s sketches of Heysham to Thursday 8 August 1816.1 This sketch, drawn with the page turned horizontally, is upside-down in relation to the main sequence (see the sketchbook’s Introduction).
