The rapid sketch occupying most of this page is likely to be a view of Hampton Court Palace beyond trees from the opposite bank of the Thames, centred on the riverside Banqueting House with its central chimneys; there is a sense of recession towards the right and the view seems to be north-eastwards with the river flowing away to the south-east. This is in contrast to north-facing studies looking upriver elsewhere in this sketchbook, which informed a subsequent watercolour, as discussed under folio 2 verso (D20736). Turner appears to have been quickly trying out an alternative composition, reinforced by the smaller version of the overall view framed by pencil lines at the top right.
Technical notes:
There are scattered splashes or offsets of grey watercolour from the ground used to prepare folio 5 recto opposite (D20741).
