The study at the top of this page, inverted in relation to the sketchbook as foliated, depicts the cliff-top town of Granville on the west coast of the Cotentin Peninsular in Normandy. On the right-hand side of the page, ascending vertically is a distant view of the Island of Jersey as seen from the Normandy coast. Granville features on multiple pages in this volume, a list of which is provided in the sketchbook introduction. These were subsequently used as the basis for colour studies as Turner worked towards an engraved series of Channel Coast views: see Tate D25212 (Turner Bequest CCLXIII 90), D25356 (Turner Bequest CCLXIII 234), D25357 (Turner Bequest CCLXIII 253), D25387 (Turner Bequest CCLXIII 264).1
