The church of Fountains Abbey is seen to the north-east from beside the ruined guest houses on the bank of the River Skell. For other views, see under folio 43 recto (D09865; Turner Bequest CXXXIV 64). Compare the less detailed view from the west in the 1816 Yorkshire 1 sketchbook (Tate D10939–D10940; Turner Bequest CXLIV 38a, 39), perhaps made on the same occasion.
Technical notes:
There is extensive surface dirt or rubbing, apparently from a period when the sheet was mounted, as there is a clearly defined border, particularly towards the top left, beyond which the paper is unmarked. However, there appears to be no record of the drawing’s being exhibited.
