The pale arc in the grey sky suggest a rainbow over the Thames Estuary to the north-west of Margate’s Great Beach, framing figures on the shore and on the jetty of Jarvis’s Landing Place. Some of them seem to be wearing fishermen’s clothing, as seen in some of the studies categorised elsewhere in this catalogue as ‘Figures on a Beach c.1826–45’. There seems to be an air of watchfulness, and perhaps the occasion is, as Finberg suggested, ‘Morning after the storm’.1 For more details of the setting, see the Introduction to this subsection.
