See catalogue note to folio 7 verso (D06190) for boat studies and diagrams in this sketchbook These diagrams appear to be of a similar boat, seen in profile. Bailey, speculating that they show what Turner’s boat was like, describes them as of ‘more or less a Thames wherry, clinker- or lapstrake-built, with low topsides, a raking stem and broad stern’. He adds; ‘The fact that a lateen rig would be unhandy when obliged to tack frequently may have convinced him to have lugsails or spritsails for main and mizzen, and perhaps a jib for extra windward drive and help in bringing the boat about from one tack to the other’. Further diagrams are on folio 9 (D06193).
