This page contains an inscription and a very rough, schematic drawing of two figures. This is likely to represent a copy of a painting or other work of art. The subject is currently unidentified although it was probably something Turner saw in a collection in Parma. Similar sketches can be found on folios 6 verso–7 (D16652–D16653). James Hakewill (1778–1843) had provided Turner with advice about Parma’s artistic treasures in the Route to Rome sketchbook (Tate D13897; Turner Bequest CLXXI 21) and on a separate sheet of paper (see Tate D36333; Turner Bequest CCCLXVIII B).
