As with the view on folio 2 recto (D09483), the subject appears to be Chudleigh Rocks, an outcrop just south-west of the small town of the same name. Turner’s viewpoint seems to be on or near the lane west of Lawell House, looking north-east up the valley below the rocks, with the castellated tower and shallow spire of St Martin and St Mary’s Church in Chudleigh beyond to the left. Assuming the identification is correct, there are now more trees on the skyline, obscuring the tower. The bridge on folio 5 recto (D09486) may be nearby.
Technical notes:
A dark mark at the bottom right matches one on the opposite page (the verso of Tate D09484; CXXXII 3).
Verso:
Blank; a dark mark at the top right matches one on folio 5 recto opposite (D09486).
