The significance of the tree and landscape forms in the slight sketch on the left is unclear. The isolated detail of a distant church tower beyond trees may be a view of St Peter’s, Chertsey in Surrey, looking east from St Anne’s Hill. Technical notes:
As in most other cases in this sketchbook, John Ruskin’s customary red ink page number is not immediately apparent adjacent to the later stamp.
