Joseph Mallord William Turner Canterbury Cathedral to the West from St Martin's Church c.1830

Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 8 Verso:
Canterbury Cathedral to the West from St Martin’s Church c.1830
D35772
Turner Bequest CCCLXIII 8a
Pencil on white wove paper, 76 x 98 mm

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, this is a less detailed version, from a similar viewpoint, of the two-page drawing of Canterbury from the east on folios 7 verso–8 recto (D35770–D35771); see both entries for aspects of the scene, and under folio 3 recto (D35791) for other views of Canterbury in this sketchbook and elsewhere.
In his 1909 Inventory, Finberg somewhat misleadingly linked this page with folio 9 recto opposite (D35773) under the overall title ‘Views of “Richborough.”’,1 but the views of the latter are separate subjects, only one of which extends briefly onto the present page.
