This is the right part of a double-page spread continued from D12003; Turner Bequest CLIII 5, opposite, and further right on D12005; Turner Bequest CLIII 7, depicting Caley Crags from below. The sketch served as the basis of a finished watercolour, Caley Crags, with Deer (private collection)1 painted for Walter Fawkes of Farnley Hall about 1818. The inscribed number ‘3’ relates to the list of proposed staffage written on a preceding page (D11996; Turner Bequest CLIII 1): ‘3 2 Stags – 3 Hinds –’. The present writer has suggested that Walter Fawkes might have made this note when commissioning the watercolour, although in the event Turner rather exceeded his brief and provided the stags with eight hinds. The finished watercolour is listed as ‘23 Rocks deer’ in the list of watercolours in hand (or intended) on another page of this sketchbook (D12013; Turner Bequest CLIII 11a).
For Caley Crags in this sketchbook see notes to D12003.
