With the sketchbook turned horizontally, Turner filled this page with a study of the Brittany town of Brest. Among the landmarks identified by Tate curator Ian Warrell in this scene are the Rade de Brest coastal formation, military buildings including the Bagne, and the Tour Tanguy. Brest features on multiple pages in this part of the volume, a list of which is included in the sketchbook introduction.
