A two-masted vessel is depicted here with a smaller attending vessel pulled up alongside. In the smaller vessel are two figures, one of whom stands facing the larger boat with a coil of rope wrapped round his left shoulder. Turner drew a second sketch of the same two boats and figures from slightly further away opposite on folio 4 verso (Tate D18531; Turner Bequest CCXI 4a). Ian Warrell has suggested that an inscription on that page referring to Théodore Gudin (1802– 1880), ‘the French Painter of Marine’, may relate to the drawing on the present page.1 Alternatively, it may refer to a second, much smaller sketch on that page.
For a list of all Turner’s sketches of shipping in this sketchbook, see folio 1 (Tate D18525; Turner Bequest CCXI 1).
