A study of Bernkastel’s Gothic St Michael’s Church occupies the left foreground of this drawing, Turner recording its turreted spire and the buildings surrounding it with relative detail. Beyond, atop the conical mount, is the Burg Landshut and on the opposite bank of the Moselle to Bernkastel, the town of Kues.
This drawing and others in the 1824 sketchbooks are related to a highly finished watercolour of the town and its castle produced in around 1830; see Tate D19757–D19760, D20176, D20178–D20182; Turner Bequest CCXVI 104a–106, CCXIX 15, 17–21.1
