The subject of this harbour scene with shipping is unidentified, but may be Italian, and possibly at Genoa, as the sheet is numbered successively with a definite Genoa view (Tate D33755; Turner Bequest CCCXLI 76); see the Introduction to this section for further brief discussion and dating. Details, notably the line of the hull in the foreground, are picked out in red chalk in addition to the more customary white highlights; there also appears to be a written note of a blue item, perhaps a chequered flag or sail.
Verso:
Blank; inscribed by John Ruskin in pencil ‘234 | O’ bottom right.
