The subject appears to be Abingdon, of which there may be a further view on folio 24 of this sketchbook (D04762). For Turner’s view of Oxford and adjacent Thames valley see the Introduction to this sketchbook. The watercolour marks at the top and right margins of this leaf led Finberg to conclude that a preceding page or pages with coloured drawings had been cut out of the sketchbook, and that the terms of the Executors’ endorsement suggested ‘this was probably done before it came into possession of nation’.
