This is a rough overall compositional study in ink for the painting Apullia in Search of Appullus (Tate N00495), exhibited at the British Institution in 1814;1 for more details and related studies on adjacent pages, see under folio 63 verso (D09976).2

Technical notes:
The drawing is heavily stained in the areas towards the edges corresponding with the overlaps of the leather cover inside the back of the sketchbook opposite (Tate D40813).
