See Introduction to the sketchbook for Ruskin’s misdating of this sketch in the National Gallery displays to ‘Turner’s period of development (1775–1800)’. Finberg’s connection with Folkestone (which he also proposed for folios 18 and 19 (D05444, D05445; Turner Bequest LXXXVIII 17, 18) is unconfirmed. A similar scene on the same coastline is on folio 7 (D05434).
