See note to folio 10 of this sketchbook (D05404; Turner Bequest LXXXVII 29). This subject is continued on folio 13 (D05426; Turner Bequest LXXXVII 51), appearing inverted. When Ruskin broke up the sketchbook he split the two sections of this double-page spread, numbering the other ‘51’, thus destroying Turner’s study of a single ship firing her guns from her ports amidships. The portions were rejoined when the sketchbook was rebound in 1934.
