This sketch appears to represent boats upon a shore. Despite the rough and faint nature of the pencilled lines it is possible to make out the hull and masts of two or three vessels. The position of the drawing interrupts the sequence of Turner’s notes from Eustace’s A Classical Tour of Italy suggesting that it could predate the artist’s use of the book as a notebook in preparation for his first trip to Italy
