Turner’s note indicates the ship on the right to be a French frigate. See note to folio 10 of this sketchbook (D05404; Turner Bequest LXXXVII 29). ‘French beam’ is noted by Turner on folio 11 verso (D05407; Turner Bequest LXXXVII 32) and perhaps another French frigate on folio 28 (D05420; Turner Bequest LXXXVII 45). He may have seen captured French ships on the Thames.
