Joseph Mallord William Turner 1775–1851
Folio 14 Verso:
A Classical Façade with an Arch 1805
D05510
Turner Bequest XC 14a
Pen and ink on off-white wove paper, prepared with a grey wash, 150 x 258 mm

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Several sketches in this sketchbook show variants of this arched structure, especially folio 18 verso (D05515) but also folios 20 verso and 21 verso (D05519, D05521). In the context of a classical seaport, these seem to anticipate buildings in Dido Building Carthage, exhibited in 1815 (National Gallery, London).1
