Buildings, with Distant Apennine Mountains 1829
D14860
Turner Bequest CLXXVIII 16
Pencil on white laid paper, 97 x 132 mm
Inscribed in red ink ‘16’ top left, upside down
Stamped in black ‘CLXXVIII – 16’ top left, upside down

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, this loosely rendered study features buildings in the foreground and the distant peaks of the Apennine Mountains beyond. A precise location is difficult to pinpoint, although Turner was likely travelling north-east through the region of Umbria.
Technical notes:
There appears to be a spider pressed into the paper in the top-left corner.
