Inverted relative to the sketchbook’s foliation, this extremely loose study represents the Apennine Mountains, with a town or village indicated at the centre. Turner was possibly in the vicinity of Terni or Foligno in Umbria, travelling north-east from Rome towards Ancona on the Adriatic coast. This is possibly a variant study of the mountain view on the verso (D14856), tentatively identified as the villages of Belfiore and Pale along the Chienti Valley.
