This cursory study of a building is difficult to identify; as Finberg’s 1909 Inventory of the Bequest proposed, it appears to lie on the banks of a river, presumably the Tiber.1 Turner was possibly sketching on his departure from Rome in early January 1829, as he headed north-east towards the Apennine Mountains.
