Description
This letter evidently covers the same time as seven special postcards and two letters about the Lipchitz' house from Jeanne Bucher, while Jacques and Berthe Lipchitz stayed in Toulouse, in 'the free zone' of France, after fleeing Paris, occupied by Nazis, and while waiting for the possibility to leave the country and enter the USA. Lipchitz entrusted the care of his house and his works of art to Jeanne Bucher.
In the letter Lipchitz thanks Jeanne for all her efforts and informs her where all his works are, mostly in his house except the rest which are kept 'at Andre [de Fels?]'. He mentions gravures that she can use for her publication, probably the same she mentions in her letter to Lipchitz, dated 20 December [1940]. Lipchitz agrees to let a tenant in his house but asks the rent to be at least 2.500, because of the bills for electricity, water and gas.
He indicate that 'we dream to join Sybille'. Probably, it means to leave the country. Sybille is the name of their common friend, which was mentioned often in their correspondence.
He also writes: 'If you go, allow me to count on you to squeeze things in as well as possible'.
In the end Lipchitz tells: 'If I will be able to receive very fast 35 drawings for 'Prometheus' which can be dismounted, I would be very happy'.
