Description
Full text in translation:
'Dear friend,
Here I am again, in this place, I was forced by Yulla because of my extreme tiredness, I couldn't do it anymore. I must admit that she was right. With my exhibition in New York that is starting in May, I had to lend all my new materials. Which means that I must work at the studio but also at the foundry that is an hour away from New York. With the travel that I'm already doing coming into New York, it's becoming a lot of daily travel and it's tiresome. After a while it becomes a lot. After all, I'm nearly 60. Which means I rarely have the time to go out or do anything else than my sculptures. I'm dying in here, there is nothing to do and I'm not staying long enough to properly rest. I'm only here for a week.
I'm taking this time to chat with you. It's less beautiful here than where I'm living but it's calmer. It has a forest and it's near the ocean. This combined with the great food makes it an ideal place to rest.
It would have been nice to stay here for a month at least, I'm sure it would have made me feel better and would have had a positive and lasting effect on my paintings. I'm full of desire but I don't have the time or the energy to carry out everything that runs through my heart or through my head.
How are you my dear friend? I hope that you are enjoying the Berlin Museum being in the Petit Palais and that you are working well with spring approaching. Maybe also a few works to color life.
I've received a letter from the [check the name] Museum, saying that they have restored their Gericault and that it is superb. I hope I will have a photograph.
A strong handshake, Lipchitz.'
There is a drawing in pen on the back side of envelope, depicting a painting, the portrait of a young woman in the frame.
