This sketchbook includes studies for two of the themes he was commissioned to depict as an Official War Artist: opencast coalmining (1943) and a series of blast furnaces and steel foundries which he made in 1944 at Woolwich Arsenal. There are also several drawings of landscapes and organic forms, probably from the same period. Over half the pages are blank.
