Almost all the drawings in this sketchbook are studies for the Coventry tapestry, mainly for the seated figure of Christ. Sutherland accepted this commission in January 1952 and spent most of the first year pondering the scheme and studying the various ways it had been treated in the past. These studies probably date from 1953-54 when he made a large number of drawings, trying out different ideas.
