Description
10 September
Dear Baroness Schey!
I can’t say how much I’m looking forward to your visit! From now on I’m done with my old habit of complaining about how short the days are. I watched the aeroplane fly past above the fog, and it actually seemed slow, far too slow! Then I thought of the things that generally seem fast – lightning, falcons – and even these seem slow and ponderous now!
I’m as well as my solitude allows. The cooking is coming on in leaps and bounds, and I’m getting better at the other housework too. Having got over my initial resistance, it no longer bothers me at all now.
I’ve just picked up the stack of newspapers from the last few days and I’m attacking it with a red pen and a pair of scissors as though it were my arch enemy. I’m enclosing here an amusing and historically interesting article about Jack Diamond. You probably already read about Viscount Cecil’s wonderful speech at Geneva in the Munich papers. There was also an article in the ‘Neue Freie Presse’ about an international congress of doctors which has decided that ‘light, air and water’ are ‘the most vital elements in every field of medicine’! Another step forward, another victory for nudity! Apropos nakedness, I notice that my envelopes are transparent, so I’ll have to admit that there are exceptions to the rule of always striving for the sunlight. I shall dress this letter in press cuttings!
