Dear Pepi,
Many thanks for the card from Cornwall.
August is not just a miserable, usually rainy month that heralds the end of the so-called summer; it is also a month with an astonishing number of birthdays. Yours is among them (unfortunately so is mine; it shall not be marked). I don’t know whether you have this little book by Winston Churchill; we hope not. Here it is with best wishes, many happy returns and all that.
I will try to write those essays, though I have no idea what art is, and my focus is anything other than sharp as far as expressionism is concerned. At the moment I’m living in a state of chronic despair: J is getting worse, losing weight and often doesn’t know what to do to help herself, and nor do I. Meanwhile I’m plagued by inspiration – I go for walks or runs in the park, I nurse, I console, I do the shopping etc etc etc etc. Such is life – or so they say.
Well, I must get on. Happy birthday, and best wishes to you and Pamela.
Yours,
Erich
