Mirga-Tas is best known for creating colourful textile collages made with materials and fabrics gathered from family and friends. The artist brings attention to the everyday life of her community – their relationships, alliances, and shared activities – by depicting those closest to her. She creates patchworks from materials including curtains, jewellery, handkerchiefs, shirts, and sheets, which are sewn together to form what she calls 'microcarriers of history’.
This will be the first major UK museum exhibition of Romani visual artist, educator and activist Małgorzata Mirga-Tas. It will feature a range of large-scale collages, including several new textiles, as well as three pieces recently acquired by Tate, the first works by a Romani artist to join the collection.
Hear Małgorzata Mirga-Tas in conversation with Anne Barlow, Director, Tate St Ives on the opening day of her exhibition at Tate St Ives.
A gallery admission ticket, Tate Membership or Local's Pass is also required to attend this event.
Małgorzata Mirga-Tas is organised by Tate St Ives in collaboration with the Whitworth.
