Manon de Boer, Bella, Maia and Nick (From nothing to something to something else, part 1)
On visits to Cornwall the filmmaker sat in on sessions at the International Musicians Seminar (IMS) at Prussia Cove. After the concentrated intensity of the IMS workshops she was then drawn to the idea of spending time with children, asking them to work together to experiment with new sounds and rhythms. She invited three music students from Helston Community College to come together at Porthmeor Studios in St Ives, to improvise and play. The project is a development of her continuing fascination with the way in which open-ended time can provide the conditions for creativity.
This work was first presented at Kestle Barton on the Lizard peninsula from May to July 2018 as part of Groundwork, a programme of international contemporary art organised by CAST, Helston in partnership with Kestle Barton, Newlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange and Tate St Ives. The Groundwork programme continues until the end of September.
This is a Groundwork film commission by Dutch artist, Manon de Boer.
