UNIQLO Tate Play Holiday Make Studio: The Joy of Feeling Relaxed Hour

Step into a magical world of texture, sound and movement this half-term at Tate Modern

Bring the whole family and explore a playful space inspired by the art of Dorothea Tanning.

Joyful colours transform the South Tank into a soothing environment that encourages rest and play. You can sway, slide and spin to a dreamy soundscape specially composed to delight the senses. Or wrap yourself in soft, weighted objects that echo the shape of Tanning’s sculptures for a moment of calm.

Created by HoLD Art Collective, this reimagining of a playground is designed to support connection and curiosity.

This session is primarily for neurodivergent children and adults, and any other visitors with sensory needs who prefer a more relaxed experience, plus their families, friends and carers. Those who are looking for a playful-yet-still-relaxing hour to start the day can visit the space – just with smaller groups so we can support any additional needs you might have.

Resources will be available on the day including:

Access Station
Ear defenders
A quiet breakout space
Fewer people in the space and smaller groups

Tate staff will be aware that this is an access hour and will take that into consideration as they look after you and the artwork.

Artists Sarah Marsh and Stephanie Jefferies create art to hold or be held within, disrupting hierarchical divisions between art and engagement. Their immersive environments use sensory materials and sculptural objects to foster calm and playful experiences. Drawing on Early Years Montessori Pedagogy, and experience working with neurodivergent and SEND audiences, HoLD Art Collective craft spaces for tactile connections, joyful encounters, and shared memories.

All Tate Modern entrances are step-free. You can enter via the Turbine Hall and into the Natalie Bell Building on Holland Street, or into the Blavatnik Building on Sumner street.

There are lifts to every floor of the Blavatnik and Natalie Bell buildings. Alternatively you can take the stairs.

Fully accessible toilets are located on every floor on the concourses.
A quiet room is available to use in the Natalie Bell Building on Level 4.
Ear defenders can be borrowed from the Ticket desks.
