It’s moving from I to It – The Play is a new performance written and directed by Tim Etchells for two actors to be staged within Tate Modern’s collection. Commissioned by London-based curatorial initiative FormContent, the work playfully animates the questions and discourses informing FormContent’s two-year project It’s moving from I to It, of which Etchells’s play forms the final chapter.
An ongoing investigation into fiction as possible curatorial framework It’s moving from I to It has taken varied forms such as research and programming, readings, exhibitions and commissioned texts. Tim Etchells was invited to draw upon the rich and dense body of voices and propositions constituting the programme, responding in the form of a linguistically explosive and unstable play through which he makes a subjective and playful reading of the scenes and thematics of the project. Working across text, visual material and performance, this conclusive chapter makes tangible some of the concerns raised by various contributors regarding issues of authorship, language, and institutional rhetoric.
Set against Tate Modern’s collection, It’s moving from I to It – The Play instigates a dialogue with the particular context in which it is carried out, allowing a reflection on different modes of cultural production and dissemination.
