Join Tate Liverpool and Professor Douglas Crimp for the Keywords lecture series and help shape Keywords, a forthcoming exhibition at Tate Liverpool.
Keywords is a collaborative exhibition at Iniva London (27 March – 18 May 2013) and Tate Liverpool (27 February – 11 May 2014). It is inspired by Raymond Williams’s seminal book Keywords – a vocabulary of culture and society (1976). The exhibition expands Williams’s studies of words into three-dimensional form, exploring, interrogating and expanding the meaning of the words through art.
Positioned between the exhibitions at Iniva and Tate Liverpool is an ambitious series of lectures by artists, musicians, theorists, novelists and poets which aims to consider which Keywords are of particular relevance for culture and society today. Each speaker has been asked to select and consider a Keyword from Williams’s book that resonates with them.
In his lecture, Douglas will be discussing the keyword theory. On the evening there will be an opportunity for attendees to actively engage and share their thoughts with the guest speaker and exhibitions curators. Therefore do come equipped with questions. Your contribution will help shape the exhibition Keywords at Tate Liverpool.
Douglas Crimp is Fanny Knapp Allen Professor of Art History at the University of Rochester, New York where he previously taught Visual and Cultural Studies. Crimp is the author of On the Museum’s Ruins, 1993 and ‘Our Kind of Movie’: The Films of Andy Warhol, 2012, amongst many other titles. Crimp was the curator of the Pictures exhibition at Artists Space in 1977 and an editor of October magazine from 1977 to 1990. He is currently at work on a memoir of New York in the 1970s called Before Pictures.
Raymond Williams (1921–1988) was one of the most significant thinkers of the post-war period. After returning from war in 1945, Williams noted that the usage and meanings of everyday words that repeatedly crop up in our discussions of culture and society had changed. These changes fascinated Williams who in 1976 published the seminal book, Keywords – a vocabulary of culture and society, in which he analysed the use and meanings of over a hundred words.
