Discover the influence of leftist critic and theorist Raymond Williams on our understanding of language.
Dr Derek Tatton, Administrator of the Raymond Williams Foundation, will present a brief introduction to Raymond Williams's seminal book Keywords (1976 and 1983 editions) which has inspired our current exhibition Keywords: Art, Culture and Society in 1980s Britain. Tatton will also discuss New Keywords, a later publication written by an international array of noted scholars which draws on the ideas, philosophy and theories explored by Williams.
Tatton’s introduction will be followed by a discussion circle. In these discussions visitors can explore several key words from the books, such as ‘Art’, ‘Conventional’, ‘Consumer’ and ‘Postmodernism’, making connections between the words and the works on display.
The session is organised by the Raymond Williams Foundation. (RWF) with Philosophy in Pubs (PiPs) and Tate Liverpool.
