Tate Britain Exhibition

Watercolours of the Twentieth Century

1 January – 31 December 1958

Sir William Quiller Orchardson, The First Cloud 1887. Tate.

Sir William Quiller Orchardson
The First Cloud (1887)
Tate

This exhibition included works by Francis Davis Millet, William Holman Hunt, Lord Leighton, John Singer Sargent, William Powell Frith, William McTaggart, Sir William Orchardson, George Frederick Watts.

Since 1897 many gifts and acquisitions have come to the Tate Gallery.

Tastes change, and perhaps the pictures which hung on the walls that day in July when the Prince of Wales (King Edward VII) opened the Gallery were later less admired and praised; yet Victorian art was emerging and slowly it was becoming realized, and appreciated, how extremely good many of the later nineteenth century artists were.
