Six things to do with your family when you visit Steve McQueen Year 3

The exhibition Steve McQueen Year 3 is an epic portrait of all the 7–8 year olds who live in London.

Over the course of one year, a team of specially trained Tate photographers visited year 3 classes in schools all over the city. Over 76,000 children had their class photograph taken!

The exhibition is free but you need to book a timed ticket.

If your child was part of the exhibition, contact their school for the exact location of their photograph. Visitor Assistants will not be able to show you the location of any specific photo. This is for safeguarding reasons.

When you arrive, pick up a map or ask a Visitor Assistant to help you find your way to the Duveen galleries.

The artist Steve McQueen chose to photograph 7 and 8 year old children because he thinks it’s a pivotal time in a child’s development.

Are your children the same age, older or younger? Talk about what it feels like to be that age as you walk around the exhibition as a family.

Who might this group of 7 and 8 year olds become?

A lot of people had school photograph days every year at school. You had to make sure your uniforms looked smart and you smiled for the camera.

Choose two photographs side by side somewhere in the gallery and compare how the children are posing. Are they being cheeky? Are they all smiling? How are they positioned?
