This four-week course examines notions of black feminist art and how identity shapes artistic practices. It includes close engagement with the Collection Displays at Tate Britain, including works by artists such as Sonia Boyce and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye. Participants will also visit Kara Walker’s new installation in the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern.
Through a range of gallery visits and group activities, participants will discuss how artists have explored questions around gender, race and class, and how art might be used as a tool for social change. There will also be a focus on the continued exclusion from art institutions of many black women and non-binary artists, and how emerging artists are challenging the status quo.
The course is led by curator and writer Bolanle Tajudeen. It builds on discussions developed in 2018’s Art in the Age of Black Girl Magic course, but this new version is open to all and requires no prior experience or knowledge.
