Tate Satellite

Live Webcam | Tate Satellite

picture of planet earthThe Tate Satellite was launched on June 6th 2002. It is currently orbiting at an orbital velocity of 7.67 km/sec approximately 400km from earth in a polar to polar low earth orbit. The satellite orbits earth every 92.56 mins and traverses the entire globe in the course of 15.56 orbits - 24 hours - 1 day.

Tate Satellite is a pilot programme taking place as part of the research and development into the new Tate. Whilst it is not envisaged that Tate in Space will stay within a singular orbit of earth a pilot satellite programme was seen as essential for the development of instruments and new technologies for the Tate in Space gallery.

The satellite consists of a combination of highly polished (lightweight) metal alloy and photo-voltaic (solar) panels. The polished surface increases its reflectivity and therefore its visibility from earth (depending on the relative poisition of the sun).

Sightings

We are compiling data for when the Tate Satellite may be visible from where you are. Currently we have compiled this data for a few key locations worldwide (see below). If your town or city is not included and you would like us to add it to our list, please email space@tate.org.uk and let us know where you are (include both town/city and country information) and we will endeavour to expand the locations covered according to demand.

If you see the Tate Satellite pass over we would like to hear from you. If you manage to capture your sighting on camera, and you would like your picture to be displayed on the Tate in Space website, please send us a jpeg (less than 100k with your name and the time and place you saw it go past) to space@tate.org.uk.
We will be displaying selected sightings on the Tate in Space site.
