August 2005 saw the highest number of visitors in any one month in Tate Liverpool’s seventeen year history, with 102,237 people coming to the Gallery. It was also the first time that a month’s attendance had broken through the 100,000 mark.
Visitors have experienced a range of exhibitions and events including Summer of Love: Art of the Psychedelic Era, DLA Piper Series: International Modern Art and assume vivid astro focus as well as free summer holiday activities for children.
Tate Liverpool’s Director Christoph Grunenberg said: “This is a remarkable achievement which I hope we can build on during the next three years leading up to European Capital of Culture in 2008.”
Over 25,000 people have been to see Summer of Love: Art of the Psychedelic Era which is the largest exhibition ever staged at the Albert Dock Gallery and runs until 25 September 2005. This visual spectacular exploring psychedelic art from the 1960s has works from the UK, United States, Europe and Japan. A selection of posters, album covers, documentary material and underground magazines are on display alongside paintings, photographs and sculptures including the only known painting by Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin’s psychedelic Porsche. Projections and film installations replicate the total experience of psychedelic light shows and music performance.
Summer of Love, curated by Christoph Grunenberg, is going on a European tour in the autumn demonstrating Tate Liverpool’s European and international ambitions. It will be at the Kunsthalle Schirn Frankfurt from 2 November 2005 – 12 February 2006 and the Kunsthalle Vienna from 5 May – 3 September 2006.
