Tate Liverpool launches artist open call

Art North West

North west based artists invited to apply

Tate Liverpool is inviting artists from across the region to submit their ideas for an exhibition or project. The scheme entitled Art North West offers the opportunity for one selected artist or artist collective to have their work represented at the internationally renowned art museum in spring 2021.

Artists currently living and working in the north west of England (Cheshire, Cumbria, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Merseyside) are invited to respond to the open call by 10 September 2019, after which time proposals will be longlisted by Helen Legg, Director, and Tamar Hemmes, Assistant Curator, Tate Liverpool. A panel of selectors made up of Helen and Tamar as well as Simeon Barclay, a Leeds based artist, Charlotte Keenan, Curator of British Art, Walker Art Gallery, and Linsey Young, Curator of Contemporary British Art, Tate Britain will then make the final decision.

Working with the support of Tate Liverpool staff across Curatorial, Learning, Development, Communications, Art Handling, Visitor Experience and Interpretation departments, the chosen artist or collective will have 18-months to develop and ultimately present their project. This is a unique opportunity for the successful candidate to have their artistic practice represented at Tate Liverpool, the most visited gallery of modern and contemporary art outside of London.

Helen Legg, Director, Tate Liverpool said:

'Since taking on the role of Director and moving to Liverpool last year I have been struck by the thriving north west art scene that is cultivating exciting art and artists. We hope that this opportunity offers support and continues to build on our relationship with this community, which has been fostered through artists’ breakfasts at Tate Liverpool and numerous studio visits. In the long-term I want this to demonstrate Tate Liverpool’s continued commitment to the region’s artists, encouraging them to continue to work here and also inspiring artists from outside the region to consider living and working in the north west.’

Tate Liverpool is looking for applicants who can demonstrate a serious commitment to their practice, evidenced in a strong body of work. They should have at least 5 years exhibiting experience. Applicants must be living and working in the north west of England to be eligible for consideration. Artists and artist collectives who wish to apply are asked to download the application form from www.tate.org.uk/about-us/working-at-tate and submit it to opencall@tate.org.uk by 12 noon, Tuesday 10 September 2019.

Helen Legg will also host three Information Sessions in venues across the north west of England for those interested in applying to ask questions and find out more. They will be taking place on Friday 16 August, Thursday 22 August, and Tuesday 27 August. Times and locations to be confirmed, information will follow on the Tate Liverpool website.

Art North West is curated by Helen Legg, Director, and Tamar Hemmes, Assistant Curator, Tate Liverpool. It is supported by the Brian Mercer Charitable Trust.
