Late at Tate will return to Tate Britain this season with a new series of free events curated by young people. The gallery will open up on the first Friday evenings of April, June, August, October and December for specially curated late openings featuring music, live performances and workshops. 2017’s series will be inspired by displays, exhibitions and artworks in Tate’s collections including Tate Britain’s major exhibition Queer British Art 1861-1967.

Late at Tate Britain is curated exclusively by 18-25 year olds from Tate Collective London who produce a range of free events and festivals for young people to experiment, create and innovate through art and ideas. Late at Tate Britain is part of the Circuit programme, led by Tate and funded by Paul Hamlyn Foundation. Circuit is a national programme that engages young people in the arts with a focus on encouraging those with least access to galleries and museums.

The series will kick off on 7 April with an evening exploring Black British Experience from the 60s to the present day. Inspired by a display of black British photography, Stan Firm Inna Inglan Black Diaspora in London, 1960-70s, the evening will bring together iconic photographers of the era including Neil Kenlock, Syd Shelton and James Barnor, with contemporary commentators including social historian Emma Dabiri, for a rare public discussion of their work and the social backdrop then and now. The packed programme will also include performances by poets Jay Bernard and Kareem Parkins-Brown, the opportunity to strike a pose in retro fashion at the East London Thrift Store Polaroid Studio and music from Touching BaseDJs, who will provide a soundtrack of soul, funk and black British jazz from the Duveen Gallery.

Later in the series, events will continue to explore themes inspired by displays, exhibitions and artworks at Tate Britain. In response to Queer British Art 1861-1967, the evening of 2 June will be dedicated to gender, sexuality and identity, followed by explorations of fashion and class, the politics of hair and gender fluidity.

Mark Miller, Circuit Programme National Lead said: “We are really looking forward to seeing how Tate Collective bring together an evening of creative ideas inspired by Stan Firm Inna Inglan Black Diaspora in London, 1960-70s. It is a great way to start an artistically diverse new season of programme and we look forward to connecting with diverse new audience.”

Late at Tate Britain is a free, drop-in event. Spaces are available on a first come, first served basis. At this event, street food will be available.
