Nick Clarry, Sir Isaac Julien CBE, Jack Kirkland, Tim Richards CBE, Professor Patricia Rubin and June Sarpong OBE have been appointed as new trustees to Tate’s Board.
The six appointees will bring fresh insight to the Board and a breadth of experience across the arts, entertainment, business and finance sectors.

Announcing new trustees across the Tate, British Museum and V&A, Culture Minister Chris Bryant said:
“Public appointees help to lead some of the UK’s best-known institutions, and these immensely talented individuals with a wide range of personal and professional experience will make great contributions to how they are run and help to promote British soft power abroad.
“These roles are an important part of our cultural infrastructure, and I’m delighted that we have 16 new trustees for the V&A, Tate and British Museum.”
Nick Clarry, Sir Isaac Julien CBE, Jack Kirkland and June Sarpong OBE will begin their terms as trustees on 24th March 2025 for a period of four years. Tim Richards CBE will start his four-year term as a Trustee from 23 June 2025.
As Tate’s National Gallery liaison trustee, Professor Patricia Rubin’s term began in November 2024 and will last four years.
The appointees will join Tate’s current Trustees Roland Rudd, Dame Jayne-Anne Gadhia DBE, Dame Anya Hindmarch DBE, Kwame Kwei-Armah OBE, Michael Lynton, Rosalind Nashashibi, Danny Rimer OBE, Howard Shore and Lord Ed Vaizey.
Tate’s Board of Trustees determines policy and, together with senior Tate staff, sets Tate’s strategic direction. It oversees the management of the gallery, with the trustees acting as guardians of the public interest.
About the Appointees
Nick Clarry is a Managing Partner at CVC Capital Partners, a global private equity firm, listed on EuroNext Amsterdam. Nick joined CVC in 2003 and is based in London, where he is responsible for the Sports, Media & Entertainment investment vertical. As leader of the SME vertical for CVC, Nick has been involved in many large investments including Formula One, La Liga, Six Nations Rugby, Volleyball World, Gujurat Titans in the Indian Premier League, among others. CVC has a strong commitment to philanthropic work in its local communities around the world. Nick serves on the CVC Foundation Philanthropy Committee and has also sought to provide philanthropic support to a number of organisations in London over the last 20 years, including The Old Vic, the British Film Institute and the Courtauld Institute among others. Nick has served as the Chair at The Old Vic Theatre since 2014, which is one of the leading not-for-profit theatres in the UK, working in the arts, education and the community. Nick holds an MA in Economics from the University of Cambridge.
Sir Isaac Julien CBE RA is a critically acclaimed British artist and filmmaker. In 2018, Sir Isaac joined the faculty at the University of California Santa Cruz where he is a Distinguished Professor of the Arts and leads the Moving Image Lab together with Arts Professor Mark Nash. He has been making films and producing film installations for over 40 years, including: Once Again... (Statues Never Die) (2022), Lina Bo Bardi – A Marvellous Entanglement (2019), Lessons of the Hour – Frederick Douglass (2019), Playtime (2014), Ten Thousand Waves (2010), Western Union: small boats (2007), True North (2004), Baltimore (2003), Paradise Omeros (2002), and Vagabondia (2000). Current and recent international solo exhibitions include: Lessons of the Hour, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, 2024; What Freedom is to Me, Bonnefanten Museum, Maastricht, 2024; K21, Dusseldorf, 2023; Tate Britain, London, 2023; Lina Bo Bardi, A Marvellous Entanglement, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia, 2023; Once Again… (Statues Never Die), Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia, 2022. Sir Isaac is the recipient of The Royal Academy of Arts Charles Wollaston Award 2017 and a Kaiserring Goslar Award in 2022. In 2022, he was awarded a Knighthood for services to diversity and inclusion in art.
Jack Kirkland is a businessman and philanthropist. He is executive Chairman of Bowmer and Kirkland, one of the UK’s largest and successful construction and real estate companies. Bowmer and Kirkland builds for clients throughout Great Britain and also engages in property development through its Peveril Securities arm and joint venture partners. The group also has a large number of subsidiary companies that provide construction specialisms both to the rest of the group and other clients. In philanthropy, Jack set up, funds and chairs The Ampersand Foundation, a grant-giving charity focused on the visual arts. Jack is also a trustee of the Bridget Riley Art Foundation and from 2015 to 2020 he was Chair of Nottingham Contemporary.
Tim Richards CBE is the Founder and CEO of Vue Entertainment, the largest privately held cinema operator in Europe. He is a well-known and highly respected industry commentator in print, radio and television and has passionately supported British and Independent film for the past three and a half decades. Prior to entering the entertainment industry, Tim was a Wall Street lawyer engaged in international finance and cross-border mergers and acquisitions while based in London and New York. In February of 2021, after seven years as a Governor of the British Film Institute (BFI), the Prime Minister appointed Tim as Chair of the BFI. In December 2020 and 2021, Variety magazine named Tim as one of the 500 most influential business leaders shaping the global $2 trillion entertainment industry. The Hollywood Reporter named Tim as one of the top five entertainment innovators of the year and The Independent named Tim as one of the "20 most influential people in film". On 30 December 2024, Tim was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire for his achievements and services to British film and Cinema by His Majesty King Charles III. Tim and his wife Sylvie support a number of charities through their family charitable foundation. In 2015, Tim was awarded the Variety International Children’s Fund Humanitarian Award for his charitable work.
Professor Patricia Rubin is an art historian, professor and administrator. In addition to her decades-long teaching career in London and New York, she has been Deputy Director of the Courtauld Institute of Art and founding Head of the Courtauld Institute Research Forum (2004-9), Director of the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University (2009-17) and Acting Director of Harvard University Center for Renaissance Studies/Villa I Tatti in Florence (1997). She is currently a Visiting Scholar at the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft/Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florence and an Honorary Research Fellow of the Courtauld Institute. Museum-based education and research has been fundamental to her work. She has been involved as co-curator, consultant and catalogue contributor to numerous exhibitions and served on museum boards and committees at the Getty Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Morgan Library and Museum and the Galleria dell’Accademia of Venice.
June Sarpong OBE has enjoyed a 25-year career which has already seen her become one of the most recognisable faces of British television. June is also the Co-Founder of the Women:Inspiration & Enterprise. WIE first launched in New York in 2010 and then in the UK in 2012 and has featured leading speakers from a gamut of industries. Previous speakers include Sarah Brown, Melinda Gates, Arianna Huffington, Donna Karan, Queen Rania, Nancy Pelosi, Iman and many more. In November 2019, June was appointed as the BBC’s first Director of Creative Diversity and was in the role for three years. She was also the first Black woman to sit on the corporation’s Executive Committee and spearheaded the organisation’s $124 million investment in diverse content. She is the author of “Diversify”, “Power of Women”, “Power of Privilege” and “Calling Una Marson”. All books are published by Harper Collins and currently out on global release. June was awarded an MBE in 2007 and an OBE in 2020.
