New appointments at Tate

Tate is delighted to announce three important new appointments: Dr Leslie Carlyle as Head of Conservation; Caroline Collier as Head of National Initiatives; and Ann Gallagher as Curator (Head of British Art from 1900), Tate Collection.

Following the retirement of Roy Perry in May after thirty seven years at Tate, Dr Leslie Carlyle joins Tate as Head of Conservation in the Tate Collection division, on 19 September.

Leslie is currently working in The Netherlands in the third year of a secondment from her position at the Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI) as a senior researcher specialising in oil painting materials and techniques. She runs two research programmes, one on historically accurate oil painting reconstructions, and another on an innovative database for paint manufacturer Winsor & Newton’s nineteenth century archive. Originally trained as a paintings conservator, she completed her doctorate at the Courtauld Institute of Art’s conservation department on British nineteenth-century oil painting materials, then began a second career in research based on technical art history. At Tate, Leslie will be responsible for a team of conservators managing Tate’s wide-ranging Collection and the care of works loaned to Tate.

Caroline Collier has been appointed to the new position of Head of National Initiatives and joins Tate on 3 October.

As Director of Arnolfini in Bristol since 1999, Caroline has overseen a major development at the centre for the contemporary arts, due to reopen in September 2005. The refurbishment includes more accessible facilities and new spaces for art and education programmes. She joined the organisation from the De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill-on-Sea, where she had been General Manager with responsibility for the development and restoration of the Grade 1 listed building and for introducing an arts programme. Caroline has wide-ranging experience, having worked for the Arts Council, for Brighton Museum and Art Gallery and for National Touring Exhibitions.

As Head of National Initiatives Caroline will be responsible for leading the evolution and implementation of Tate’s National Strategy which encompasses Tate’s relationships with UK regional museums and other partner organisations.

Ann Gallagher will join the Tate Collection Division on 1 September as Curator (Head of British Art from 1900), Tate Collection.

Ann is currently Senior Curator in the Visual Arts Department at the British Council. She has recently worked on a number of projects in South America, including: Rachel Whiteread (Museu De Arte Moderna, Rio de Janeiro, and Museu De Arte Moderna, São Paulo 2003 – 2004), and Sodium & Asphalt (Museo Tamayo Arte Contemporáneo, Mexico City and Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey 2004-2005). She has been closely involved in purchasing for the British Council Collection, and in a number of exhibitions at the Venice Biennale, including Mark Wallinger in the British pavilion in 2001. She worked with David Sylvester on his Francis Bacon retrospective (Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, and the Haus der Kunst, Munich, 1997-8).

In her new role, Ann will lead the team of Collection curators responsible for British art from 1900. She will advise Jan Debbaut, Director, Tate Collection, regarding modern and contemporary British art and will play a key role in developing Tate’s relations with British artists.
