This morning Liverpool was named European Capital of Culture 2008. Congratulations to the Liverpool Culture Company and Liverpool City Council for their unwavering commitment, determination and enthusiasm and to the many Merseyside companies and the people of Liverpool who supported the bid. We have all been successful in our determination.
It is a unique and defining moment for Liverpool. Being crowned European Capital of Culture 2008 is an affirmation of our determination to use our creative capacities to the full in unleashing the regenerative power of culture.
The city’s profile has been raised beyond all expectation through the wide media coverage. Within the city, the awareness of the cultural mix has never been higher with the local community taking a real pride in what the city has to offer. This will continue right up until 2008.
At Tate Liverpool we are looking forward with great excitement. We have seen a great increase in visitor figures which we hope will continue with our exciting programme of exhibitions and displays that we have planned for the next five years. Tate Liverpool’s exhibitions have made a unique contribution to the region’s artistic vitality since 1988 and continue to complement Merseyside’s celebrated historic collections.
