Christmas gifts for all the family from Tate Liverpool

Alice in Wonderland inspires new product range and shop design

To coincide with Tate Liverpool’s special exhibition Alice in Wonderland (4 November 2011 – 29 January 2012), Tate Shop has created a unique range of merchandise which, like the exhibition, has been inspired by Lewis Carroll’s timeless Alice novels. Tate Liverpool’s Shop, and a special showcase window in Liverpool One shopping centre, will be transformed for the duration of the exhibition with the help of set design duo Christian Ashton and Alice Lund.

The theatrical shop displays take inspiration from Sir John Tenniel’s illustrations from the original publication of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Visitors to the Tate Liverpool Shop and Liverpool One will be greeted by a tea party with gravity defying cakes, oyster shells displaying jewellery and furniture propped up by dusty vintage books. Using crafts people from across the UK, Ashton and Lund have sourced handmade crochet tablecloths, bespoke frames and individually handmade artificial cakes

Ashton and Lund said:

Alice in Wonderland is an amazingly rich source of inspiration. The challenge was to create magical scenes that also work on a practical level; people can enjoy and interact with the installations rather than feeling they can look but not touch.  Customers can take a teapot from the hotch-potch tea party, or select a beautiful edition of Alice in Wonderland from an old glass fronted cabinet.

Tate’s Alice merchandise is perfect for Christmas gifts.  Products include a ‘Mad Hatter’s’ Tea Set designed by Ali Miller, quote inspired letterpress items by A Two Pipe Problem and jewellery featuring Alice illustrations by Maria Allen.

The full range of Alice in Wonderland merchandise is available at Tate Liverpool, Tate Britain and online at http://www.tate.org.uk/shop/do/Alice-Wonderland/range/2945.

Liverpool Alphabet range – exclusive to Tate Liverpool

Tate Liverpool celebrates its home city with an exclusive range designed by Andy Tuohy.  The Liverpool Alphabet incorporates iconic landmarks including the Liver Birds and Tate’s dockside home; modern icons such as the Superlambanana, and also little known links (did you known the popular children’s toy Meccano was invented in Liverpool?) This fun, informative, and decorative range celebrates Liverpool and Tate, and will appeal to residents and visitors alike.

The full A-Z is available as a poster (£12.95) and elements of the design are available on bags (£12.50) tea towels (£6.95), mugs (£9.50), magnets (£3.50), badges (75p) and postcards (from 65p).  The range is available in Tate Liverpool Shop and online at http://www.tate.org.uk/shop/do/andy-tuohy-tate/range/3305

Designer Andy Tuohy studied and worked in Liverpool in the 1980s and returned to the city with design partner Olivia to work on the range.  Based in Folkestone, Tuohy produces contemporary artworks rooted in classic twentieth century illustration and design.
